Case Studies

A hospital in the European Community

The Situation
In this case, which was referred by the Chief Executive of the hospital. a Medical Consultant started behaving inappropriately towards managers, nurses and other doctors, but remained charming to his patients. OrganisationHealth was invited to review the work of the Consultant and his relationships with other staff.

The Action

The staff and the Consultant were interviewed and relevant correspondence was reviewed. Almost two decades of abuse by the Consultant towards his staff was uncovered - the staff had remained silent through fear of dismissal. Additionally, situations were uncovered where the Consultant was undertaking procedures for which he was not trained.

The Outcome

The immediate retirement of the Consultant was recommended together with mentoring and support to the affected staff be supplied by OrganisationHealth to the point that they were confident enough to perform well at work. This enabled the service to continue without interruption, and, after many years, staff confidence was restored. All patient cases were reviewed and no patient was affected by the events.
