Resilience and nutrition
Introduction
The key influences on wellbeing are: genetics, nutrition and behaviour. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from difficult situations.
It is, also, the determination to complete or achieve a goal. Both interpretations place an emphasis on building inner strength.
8 elements for building and sustaining physical resilience
- Optimising Performance
- Healthy heart
- Weight Management
- Managing diabetes
- Boost energy levels
- Boost immune system
- Hormonal imbalance
- Good sleep

A typical nutritional programme starts with a personal assessment to establish the current individual physical condition, and to identify where significant improvements in nutrition can be made. The next step is to design a personal programme based on the assessment, and to help individuals progress through the programme.
At the corporate level, groups of staff come together for group awareness sessions, and to support each other through nutritional programmes to boost inner strength to build and sustain personal resilience.
The greater the number of employees and managers who engage in a nutritional programme the stronger the organisation becomes in ‘bouncing back’ from difficult situations.
Behaviour

Implementation
Step 1 – undertaking an assessment of staff and managers using the Quality of Working Life Assessment
Step 2 – identify where specific attention needs to be applied.
Step 3 – develop a wellbeing and performance programme based on the identified needs for nutrition and behaviour, and implement the programme.
Step 4 – identify the measurements that can be made to assess the impact of the nutritional and behavioural programmes.
Benefits
The following benefits arise from a nutrition and behavioural programme. They include:
- Raising the level of personal and organisational performance by directly linking wellbeing to performance.
- Reducing sickness absence due to psychological distress
- Reducing the level of presenteeism due to fear of losing a job, or due to psychological distress.
- Reducing levels of unplanned staff turnover.
- Salvaging levels of employee engagement with the company – reducing the risk of polarising the sentiments and engagement of employees with the company.
- Reducing the risk of legal action arising from resentment and from events linked to the current downturn, especially in relation to redundancy.
- Reducing the risks of mistakes and accidents due to psychological distress
- Individual satisfaction with the company
- Strengthening the psychological contract between employees and the company
- The maintenance of personal standards during difficult times
